The University of Winnipeg Wesmen kicked off their season on the 31st of August with both teams taking opening game lossesThe Wesmen men played the Saskatchewan Huskies and opened the scoring early in their contest as Ross Pinhammer was able to squeak one by the Huskies goaltender Michal Bandula.
Despite some solid pressure, that would be all the Wesmen could muster up in the match, as they gave up two second half goals to the Huskies en route to a 2-1 loss. Saskatchewan's Brett Levis tallied markers at the 78th, and 85th minute that put the Wesmen away for good.
After a solid first half, the Wesmen struggled in the second half being outshot by the Huskies 12-2. The Wesmen men's soccer team hosted the Mount Royal Cougars Friday and Saturday night. Friday's game ended in a 1-1 tie. There is no score for Saturday's game yet.
Up next for the men, they host Simon Fraser on September 13th (Thursday), and Victoria on September 14th (Friday). Both games at 6:00pm.
The Wesmen women didn't fare much better in their home opener, as they fell 4-1 to the University of Regina in their season opener on Friday night.
Megan Cormier scored twice for Regina paving the way for a dominant victory. Despite outshooting Regina in the first half 13-6, the Wesmen found themselves down 1-0. In the second half, Regina turned up the pace outshooting the Wesmen 15-2 and tallying three goals in the process en route to a 4-1 victory.
The Wesmen women hosted Saskatchewan last night, but the score is not yet posted. Up next for them is a road trip out west to play Lethbridge and Calgary before returning home to play their in-province rival the University of Manitoba Bisons.
